That seems to be it. Modifying the board/intel/galileo/grub.cfg to
have the following line with the added "rootwait" seems to do the
trick!

linux /boot/bzImage root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootwait
console=ttyS1,115200n8 reboot=efi,warm apic=debug rw
