Fixes my test case too, I tried:

DL_TOOLS_DEPENDENCIES += $$(filter-out $(HOST_DIR)/usr/bin/xzcat $(HOST_DIR)/usr/bin/lzip,$$(firstword $$(call suitable-extractor,$$($(2)_SOURCE))))
